Cypripedium calceolus - the Yellow Lady's Slipper growas as an individual plant or in crowded clumbs in mosit forests and mossy bogs.  (Source: Wildflowers of the Canadian Rockies by George W.Scotter and Halle Flygare). This lovely speciman was found in Bow Valley Provincial Park in early June and shows the last remaining drop of a rain shower the night before. Rosa Asicularis - Alberta's national emblem.  Also known as the prickly rose, this flower emits a delicate perfume. (Max. enlargement size 8x10.  Greeting Cards also available) Geranium richardsonii - found in aspen glades along the lower slopes of the mountains.  (Source: Wildflowers of the Canadian Rockies by George W.Scotter and Halle Flygare). This lovely specimen was backlit by the sun early one morning after a rainfall. Lilium philadelphicum - The floral emblem of Saskatchewan this beautiful lily is found in a variety of habitats from grasslands to open woodlands usually at low elevations.  Unfortunately, Western Wood Lily is often picked and as a result it has disappeared from some localities.  (Source: Wildflowers of the Canadian Rockies by George W.Scotter and Halle Flygare) Eurybia Conspicua - the flowers appear late summer or autumn, but in the spring the leaves have a citrusy perfume. (Source:  Alberta Wayside Wildflowers by Linda Kershaw) Dodecatheon pulchellum [D. radicatum] - Pulchellum means "beautiful" and the name is certainly appropriate as the varied pink to lilac-purple colours of the flowers are unusually lovely.  They can be abundant in moist meadows, the flowers producing waves of colour from June through July, depending on the elevation. Orchis rotundifolia - this exquisite orchid arises from thick, fleshy roots in bogs and moist, cool coniferous woods.  (Source: Wildflowers of the Canadian Rockies by George W.Scotter and Halle Flygare).  This specimen was found in Bow Valley Provincial Park in early June 2006. A fresh seed head is a fluffy contrast to its nearly finished counterpart. Anemone Patens; Pasque Flower - the floral emblem of Manitoba and the state flower of South Dakota, the Prairie Crocus is one of the first signs of spring displaying a delicate tulip-shaped purple flower often before snow has melted. Anemones are wind flowers; their seeds are dispersed by the wind so that new plants develop away from the parent plant. This shows the wide fruiting head with many small fruits (achenes), each of which has a long feathery attachment that can catch the wind. A rainfall the night before leaves a sprinkle of drops trapped in the delicates feathers. Ratibida columnifera - Another common name, red-spike Mexican Hat.  Many tribes used fragrant prairie coneflower leaves to make a pleasant tea. (Source:  Alberta Wayside Wildflowers by Linda Kershaw) Priarie Smoke - Geum triflorum - is a common perennial from dry grasslands to subalpine meadows.  Various part of the plant were used by Indians as a treatment for swollen eyes, as perfume, and as a tonic.  (Source: Wildflowers of the Canadian Rockies by George W.Scotter and Halle Flygare).  These erect stalks will become feathery plumes releasing their seeds into the wind. A red poppy offers a nice bit of contrast to the wild daisies and blue batchelors buttons.  (Max. enlargement size 8x10.  Greeting Cards also available) The many hues of Indian Paintbrush dominate well-drained slopes and rocky ledges from low elevations to alpine meadows.  The colour of the brush is not due to the flower, but the floral bracts which enfold them and may be blood-red, soft pink, orange or even yellow & white. (Source: Wildflowers of the Canadian Rockies by George W.Scotter and Halle Flygare). The crisp white petals against the sunny yellow core make the daisy one of the most cheerful flowers I know. A lovely white daisy turns her face to the afternoon sun. An abundant roadside plant often left to flourish by animals due to it's very prickly natur Clematis columbiana [C. occidentalis] - one of the few trailing vines found in the Rockies. This lovely specimen was discovered whilst roaming around the shore path at Emerald Lake in early June. A beautiful specimen found in Mexico's Xcaret butterfly house. Greeting Cards also available) A showy hydrangea with a variegated pink and purple blossom.  Hydrangeas can change the colour of the flower depending on the amount of aluminum in the soil. (Max. enlargement size 8x10.  Greeting Cards also available) Soft petals of pink and creamy white fill the frame in this bush rose located a the International Rose Test Garden in Portland, Oregon. A blast of hot pink hits you in this spectacular cascading rose at the International Rose Test Gardens in Portland, Oregon. A solitary bud just getting ready to burst forth.  The sepia tones give this rose a feeling of antiquity.  (The original is a pale lilac colour, please enquire if you are interested in a colour shot.) I haven't seen colourful gerberas like this since.  I picked these up one spring for my mum and spent ages playing with them and the camera as the spectacular layers of petals showed from hot salmon to the whitest of pinks all in the same flower. They look fantastic Lush green leaves show evidence of a fresh tropical rainshower in Mexico's Mayan Riviera. Riley Park in Calgary is home to lovely annual and perennial beds.  The orange marigolds set off by bright red petunias are a real eye-catcher. The glorious second stage of a Clematis Tangutica overshadows the final days of stage 3 before winter hits. A basket of petunias is set off by the turquoise colours of Emerald Lake. A batch of feathery fox tails rustles in the wind on a sunny autumn day. A lovely pink hibiscus captures delicate rays of sun at the Calgary Zoo tropical rainforest in the Conservatory building.
