Anemone Patens; Pasque Flower - the floral emblem of Manitoba and the state flower of South Dakota, the Prairie Crocus is one of the first signs of spring displaying a delicate tulip-shaped purple flower often before snow has melted. (Source: Wildflowers of the Canadian Rockies by George W.Scotter and Halle Flygare). Anemones are wind flowers; their seeds are dispersed by the wind so that new plants develop away from the parent plant. This shows the wide fruiting head with many small fruits (achenes), each of which has a long feathery attachment that can catch the wind. A rainfall the night before leaves a sprinkle of drops trapped in the delicates feathers.
